西陣織「金襴」の文化を支える丹後の技術
Craftsmanship of Tango behind the “Kinran” culture of Nishijin weaving
金襴をあしらった雛人形や五月人形用の生地を織る「もりさん」。大正十年創業の会社は京都の西陣に、出機は丹後にある。西陣で企画した織物を、出機のご夫婦に依頼して織ってもらっているのだが、その二人三脚のお付き合いはもう30年にも及ぶ。
金襴の風合いは、他の織物では決して出せない特別なもので、ソファなどの家具に使いたいとインテリア業界からも注目されている。金襴の糸は色も形状も特殊なものが多く、また多種類の糸が必要にも関わらず、それらを難なく使いこなしている熟練の手仕事は必見。金襴の金の部分は、美しく光を反射させるために可能な限り平面に織る必要があり、金糸を平面に整える作業も担っている。
差し当たっての課題は、もりさんの根幹を支える出機のご夫婦の高齢化とそれに伴う次世代への事業と技術の継承だという。丹後での織りの部門は、他社の企画した金襴の生地を生産工場として委託で受けるようにすることで、織り手を社員として雇うことも検討している。西陣織の特徴である金襴の文化を守っていくために、丹後で出来ることは何かを考えつつ、日々の仕事に励む。
Morisan weaves Kinran brocade for traditional Japanese dolls. Their office is in Nishijin, Kyoto and their supplier’s factory is in Tango: fabrics designed in Nishijin are woven by an elder couple of weavers in Tango. Their cooperation has a history of 30 years and the bond is undoubted. Yarns for brocade are often unique in color, shape and variety, thus, weaving brocade requires experience and skills. It is worth seeing how skilled artisans easily handle them. hey work hard every day in Tango considering how to protect the brocade culture of Nishijin and how they can contribute for the future.
