ジャカードを用いて織る、豊富な柄の着物用生地に特化する会社。昔から織元は問屋へ卸すのが通常の流れだが、ワタマサの四代目・渡邉正輝さんのこだわりは、小売店から直接ニーズを汲み取って、それに応えるものを織ること。背景にあるのは、自分たちが着物の文化を守っていくという自負である。
撚りの異なる糸の使い分け、シボの大小、そしてジャカードで、複雑な柄を見事に表現する。反射する光をコントロールし、まるで染め分けたように見える技術は圧巻。複数の種類の糸を用いることで、マットな表現も見事にこなす。数多くの白い糸を扱うため、しるしとなる色は複数にして管理するという。
渡邉さんの脳内に描かれた織りたいイメージが逆算され、手元で織り込まれていく光景をぜひ見てほしい。織りのあとの染めの工程を経てさらに増す深みのことまで計算しつくした上で、織っているというから驚きだ。第一工場は自宅と兼用で、糸屋格子の雰囲気が情緒を高める。鳩レースの鳩や烏骨鶏も飼育しているという、渡邉さんのプライベートなエピソードも興味深い。
Normally, weavers sell their finished fabrics to wholesalers and this is how their business flows. However, Masaki Watanabe, the fourth-generation, directly listens to retailers and weaves products to realize their needs. What’s behind all this is his commitment to protect kimono culture. He creates complicated patterns beautifully by choosing the best yarns of certain twist, size of “shibo (crimps),” with jacquard. It is almost unbelievable to watch how an image existing in Watanabe’s mind is being embodied as fabric at his hands.
