木製の撚糸機と洗えるシルクの新旧一体

丹後ちりめんの特徴である「シボ」を生み出すための糸の撚り。それを水の力で作り出す昔ながらの「水撚り八丁撚糸（強撚糸）機」を使い続けているだけでもすごいのだが、なんと丸仙で今も活躍する機材は木製というからさらに驚きだ。回転させているのは麻の紐で、切れたときは手で直す。ギアに至るまですべてが木製で、完全に自然由来の機械だ。50年以上前の撚糸機が今も現役で動いていられるのは、職人の丁寧なメンテナンスのなせる技。腐ってしまった下の方の木は繋いで使い続けるのだが、これを可能にしているのが丹後に伝わる宮大工の技術だという。
主に風呂敷などを手掛け、特に凹凸が特徴的な「鬼シボ」の生地も織っている。撚った後の絹糸にさらに天然素材の糊をつけて織る独自技術にも注目で、最近ではシーツ・枕カバー・タオルなど、商品の幅をどんどん広げている。シボによって生地に凹凸が生まれることで空気の層ができ、さらっとした肌触りと断熱効果が。シルクの生活用品は洗う度に痛むと敬遠されがちだが、ハイパーガード加工を施すことで「洗えるシルク」として脚光を浴びている。
実は、思いがけないタイミングで社長の職に就いた安田さんだったが、丸仙の技術を守り抜くことへの覚悟を胸に、従業員はみんな家族だと思って共に新たな取り組みにも挑戦していく。自宅兼工房に残っている100年以上前の風呂場のガラスや年季の入った工房内の家具にも注目してほしい。
Special twisting of yarns to create “shibo” (uneven crimps) unique to Tango Chirimen. It is already very special that Marusen still uses old-style “Haccho yarn twisting machine” which uses the power of water to create “shibo.” To make us even more surprised, the machines they are using are made of wood! They mainly produce fabric for furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloth) and also weave fabric for “Oni-shibo” which bas a distinctive unevenness. Sometimes silk is avoided as thought to be damaged by washing, however, silk by Marusen is given hyper guard processing and attracts lots of attention as “washable silk.”
