Tradition of trying new things in every generation
150年の歴史を持つ大善。四代目は化繊生地、五代目は産業用資材、そして六代目の田中栄輝さんは、インクジェット染色に挑戦した。従来、生地の産地である丹後では、染めなどの加工技術はあまり発達しておらず、最終的な商品化までたどり着くことが難しかった。インクジェット染色によって、丹後の地域内で最終的な商品化までできるようになったのは、画期的な変革だ。
子育てするなら地元が良いとUターンし、自動車販売の仕事に就いた田中さん。しばらくして家業の魅力に気づき、「今必要とされているもの、これから先必要になるものは何か」を熟考した結果、染めを生業にすることを決心した。師匠から機械を譲り受けて試行錯誤を重ね、凹凸のあるちりめん生地や革にも、写真や絵などをデータからすぐ印刷できるようにした。
「丹後ちりめんの用途を広げたい」「地元の人にもっと使ってほしい」という思いから、「たてつなぎ」というチームを結成し、子育て層向けの商品開発にも取り組んでいる。二代目が「丹後に新たな産業を」という思いで始めたオリーブ畑で収穫したオリーブのオイルの商品化も今年から本格始動している。どんどん新しい取り組みを進める田中さんだが、その様子はいたって自然。オリーブ事業に取り組み始めた理由も「自分が収穫体験をしたとき、こういう暮らしがいいなと思ったから」。気持ちと流れを大切にするそのスタイルに、未来への大きな希望を感じる。
Daizen boasts a history of 150 years. Conventionally, in Tango which is the origin of fabric, processing technique such as dyeing was not developed as much and that made it difficult to develop final products. Eiki Tanaka, the sixth-generation, started ink-jet dyeing and brought a radical change, making it possible to produce final products within Tango area. The fourth-generation started cultivation of olive with the hope to “create new industry in Tango.” This year, they have started commercialization of olive oil. Their hope for future knows no limit as they never stop taking on new challenges.
