Applying Kata-yuzen techniques to Japanese paper dyeing
シルクスクリーンの型を用いて捺染台で職人が一つ一つ染色していく。これだけを聞くと一般的な型友禅の技法と差異はないのだが、大塚染工場では、和紙にこの染色技術を用いることで、デジタルプリントでは出せない色彩表現を可能としている。着物生地から水着やファッションなど様々な素材への染色を手掛けていた技術があるからこそ可能となった和紙への型友禅技法の応用と、染め上がっていく様子を見学することができる。
Otsuka Sen Kojo adjusts a typical traditional kata-yuzen stencil dyeing, which is used for dyeing textiles in general, to dye Japanese washi paper. This special technique achieves special color expressions that digital printing can’t offer. It is possible since they have skills of dyeing various materials, from clothes of kimono to swimsuits or Western clothes. Visitors can watch how Japanese paper are dyed with their kata-yuzen technique.
